Orange Heatwave Alert for Odisha and Bengal, Yellow for UP and Bihar: IMD Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for high temperatures in several states. Odisha and West Bengal are under an orange alert for two days, while Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have a yellow alert for five days.
Regional Outlook
The IMD expects hot weather in many areas of West Bengal on April 20-21 and some parts of Odisha on April 20, gradually improving by April 21. Heat wave conditions are also likely in isolated areas of Jharkhand and Bihar from April 20-24, and in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on April 20.
Severity of Heatwaves
Severe heat wave warnings are in place for certain areas of Odisha on April 20 and West Bengal on April 20-21. Temperatures in Odisha have already soared to 44-45°C in several districts.
Expert Insights
According to the IMD, heat wave conditions will persist in Odisha for the next few days, especially in coastal and interior regions. IMD Bhubaneswar director Manorama Mohanty told ANI that over the last four to five days, heat wave has been prevailing in vast swathes of Odisha. “The condition will persist over the next two to three days.”
“In 27 cities, the maximum temperature was recorded at more than 41°C. We have issued a heatwave warning for some areas over the next 24 hours. On April 21, the heatwave condition will continue to prevail mostly in coastal and interior Odisha,” she added.
