CEA VP Kevin Vick elected next president of teachers union
Kevin Vick, currently serving as the vice president of the Colorado Education Association (CEA), has been elected as the organization’s next president. The CEA, the largest teachers union in Colorado representing nearly 40,000 educators, made the announcement following a delegate assembly on Saturday.
Vick, who has been a high school social studies teacher, has served as the union’s vice president for the past six years. He is slated to commence his three-year term as president in July, having taken a leave of absence from his teaching position at Colorado Springs Schools D 11 to focus on union leadership.
In his statement following the election, Vick expressed confidence in continuing the union’s efforts to advocate for better wages, fairer workplace conditions, and a fully funded education system in Colorado. Under his leadership, the CEA has actively campaigned for the elimination of the budget stabilization factor, a process that withholds K-12 education funding for other priorities.
Outgoing president Amie Baca-Oehlert, unable to run again due to term limits, lauded Vick’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the educational landscape in Colorado. She highlighted his leadership qualities and deep understanding of the state’s education system as crucial assets for steering the CEA towards greater success and impact.
Joining Vick in the union’s leadership is Liz Waddick, a Spanish teacher at Summit High School in Breckenridge, who was elected as the new vice president of the statewide union. Waddick, a member of the local Summit County Education Association, brings her experience and perspective to the role, contributing to the CEA’s ongoing efforts to serve the needs of educators across the state.
As Vick prepares to assume the presidency, he remains focused on championing the rights of educators, advocating for students’ needs, and fostering a culture of collective unity and strength within the CEA. With Vick’s leadership and the support of dedicated educators statewide, the CEA continues its mission to ensure a high-quality education for all students in Colorado.
